Barcelona will be joining Villarreal in the semi-finals of the Champions League after they beat Benfica 2-0. The result was in doubt though until two minutes from the end, when Eto'o wrapped things up on a quick breakaway, and up to that point an away goal for the Portuguese side would have taken them through after the 0-0 draw in Lisbon last week.

Frank Rijkaard's side should have taken the lead in only the fourth minute when they were awarded a penalty after Petit had handled from Van Bommel's cross, but Moretto guessed correctly and saved Ronaldinho's spot kick. After the keeper's brilliant performance in the first leg the doubts started to creep in, but the Brazilian midfielder made up for his mistake when he opened the scoring a few minutes later after turning a cross from Eto'o into the net.

Ronald Koeman's team were forced to come out after that, and ex Barça winger Simao shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Eto'o fired an effort over the bar at the other end and Van Bommel brought another good save out of Moretto, but Anderson came close to equalising again just before the break.

The home side kept control after the restart, although Simao, Miccoli and Karagounis did give the fans a scare or two, in particular when Valdés arrived late to a shot from the latter and Luisao put the rebound wide. But with two minutes to go Eto'o picked up a cross from Belletti to beat Moretto, and it was all over. The Catalans were through to meet AC Milan in the next round, with the possibility of another all Spanish final in Paris if Villarreal can beat Arsenal in their semi-final.
