The goals scored in Glasgow
a fortnight ago proved decisive as Villarreal came through this tie on the away
goals rule. Both clubs have been draw specialists in this year's Champion's
League. Once again it wasn't a champagne performance by Villarreal but they
have acquired the handy habit of doing just enough to progress and will be in
Friday's quarter final draw.
After just twelve minutes El
Madrigal was stunned, but far from silent, as the huge Scottish travelling
support were given cause to celebrate. Rangers went ahead after a comedy of
errors in the home defence. The Glasgow side were gifted the ball and following
a swift passing move involving Buffel and Ferguson, Viera failed to gather a
weak shot and Lovenkrands pounced to put the Scots ahead.
The Yellow Submarine
threatened to sink in the first half as it failed to get to grips with the
Scots' pressing game. Meanwhile, Rangers enjoyed plenty of possession. However,
Villarreal should have drawn level five minutes from the break when
Forlán was sent clear on goal but Waterreus came out to block the shot.
Five minutes into the second
half Villarreal made the crucial breakthrough. Riquelme carved open the Rangers
defence and when Forlán crossed, Franco's flick fell to Arruabarrena who
made no mistake with his strike at the back post.
Kyrgiakos had a chance to
put Rangers ahead again but the Greek defender scuffed a shot over the bar from
just a few yards out. But Guillermo Franco was guilty of squandering a hatful
of chances at the other end. When Franco was set up by Forlán his volley
was saved from point blank range by Waterreus. Then Franco headed straight into
the arms of the keeper following a free kick.
The home side may have lived
to regret these misses had substitute Boyd made contact with a Burke cross with
fifteen minutes to go. In a tense finish to the game Villarreal held on and
Franco had another chance to seal victory but blasted wildly over with only
Waterreus to beat. |
