Barcelona qualified with
relative ease for the quarter finals, their 1-2 win from the first leg never
really being challenged by their opponents Chelsea. The English side needed to
score two goals to have a chance of going through, but they were allowed very
few clear cut chances by a solid defence.
Frank Rijkaard put out an
identical line up to the one in the first leg, with Motta and Messi returning
to the side after missing the weekend game. Both were in action early on, Motta
testing Cech with a long shot and Messi picking up a flick from Ronaldinho but
unable to get his shot past a defender. A few minutes later though the
youngster had to go off with an injury, Larsson coming on to take his place.
The visitors had a couple of
chances themselves in the first half, the most notable of which being a header
from Drogba straight in to the arms of Valdés, and shots from Duff,
Robben and Cole in the last ten minutes before the break with mixed fortune.
Mourinho (who was constantly
booed by the home fans after provocative remarks in the build up to the game)
brought on Crespo and Gudjohnsen around the hour mark, and Crespo could well
have given his side the lead minutes later when he connected with Cole's cross
only to shoot just wide of the post. But Eto'o also kept Cech in work with a
snap-shot at the other end shortly before.
In the end though it was
down to Ronaldinho to make the difference, the Brazilian star taking the ball
from Eto'o in midfield and shrugging off challenges by Carvalho and Terry to
fire a shot wide of Cech with twelve minutes to go. Chelsea had to come out,
and Eto'o almost added another when he broke free only to hit the post soon
afterwards.
Lampard did get one back
with an injury time penalty after referee Markus Merk ruled that Van
Bronckhorst had fouled Terry, waving away claims for offside from the local
players, but the final whistle went seconds later. Barça had their
revenge for being knocked out of the competition the season before, and Chelsea
return home to concentrate on domestic competitions. |
