Barcelona took a huge step
towards reaching the quarter finals of the competition after beating Chelsea
1-2 in Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. The game got off to a lively start
despite concerns from the visitors that the pitch was not in good condition,
Lampard looping a shot over the bar from a wide free kick and Cech saving from
Messi, Ronaldinho and Motta at the other end.
The turning point came
though shortly before half time when Del Horno was sent off for another hard
tackle on Leo Messi (not the first), the local players claiming that the
youngster had exaggerated his injury. Mourinho immediately brought on Geremi to
fill the gap, sacrificing Joe Cole to make room, and then changed his strikers
at the break to introduce Drogba in to the field of play.
The second half opened with
efforts from Robben and Messi, and a long shot from Motta bounced off the top
of the bar. But soon afterwards the Brazilian midfielder put through his own
net when he and Valdés both went to clear Lampard's wide free kick, the
ball coming off his thigh past the committed keeper.
Rijkaard brought on Larsson
soon afterwards, and he immediately headed a Ronaldinho free kick over the top.
Soon afterwards though another Ronaldinho free kick bore fruit, Terry heading
the ball back in to his own net trying to defend from Márquez.
After that the Spaniards
took control, Messi hitting the bar and having a penalty appeal turned down,
Terry making two important clearances from Larsson and Ronaldinho and Cech
saving from Sylvinho and Eto'o. Valdés did well to save from Drogba at
the other end, but a quick move upfield brought Barça the winning goal,
Ronaldinho and Larsson intervening before Márquez swung the ball across
for Eto'o to head past Cech on the far post.
That was that, and a few
minutes later referee Terje Hauge called it a day. It was the first time that
Chelsea had lost at home since José Mourinho took over a couple of
seasons ago, and the result gives Barça the best possible chance of
taking revenge for their elimination from the competition last season.
