Real Madrid face an uphill
struggle to qualify for the last eight of the European Cup after losing at home
to Arsenal. The only goal of the game arrived just after half time when Henry
brushed off several challenges before slotting an angled shot past Casillas.
Real started slowly as the
English side created three clear chances in the first ten minutes. A Reyes shot
was beaten away by Casillas in the second minute before Roberto Carlos came to
the rescue with a last ditch tackle on Ljungberg. Henry then headed wide a
Reyes cross.
A weak Ronaldo effort just
after the half hour was Madrid's first shot on target. Shortly afterwards
Beckham was clean through on goal but Lehmann came out to narrow the angle and
blocked the shot. Robinho then had a long range volley well held by the German
keeper. The young Brazilian failed to take advantage again a few minutes later
after Lehmann failed to hold a stinging Roberto Carlos free kick.
The second half was so full
of goalscoring opportunities that it seemed like a game of five-a-side at
times. Henry, Diaby and Pires, had good chances to double Arsenal's lead while
Ramos and Raúl both missed with free headers. The Galacticos also had
two penalty claims turned down. Reyes produced a clumsy forward's challenge on
Cicinho in the penalty area and later Lehmann appeared to hook out a leg and
catch Beckham who would surely have equalised.
But Arsenal always looked to
have more cutting edge about their work and defended more solidly than their
opponents. The biggest surprise of all was that there was only one goal in such
an open match. |
