A late strike from Rivaldo spoilt the debut of Real Madrid's new coach Juan Ramón López Caro, the Spaniards falling to a 2-1 defeat in the last group game at Olympiakos. López Caro had been brought in as a temporary replacement when Vanderlei Luxemburgo was sacked at the weekend, and he found himself together with several of his old charges from Real Madrid's B team after Luxemburgo's last act was to call them up for this game. All the positions in the group had already been decided, Madrid themselves assured of second place and the Greek's out of Europe after finishing last, and the new boss used the occasion to give a run out to reserve keeper Diego López and Castilla players De la Red, Balboa and Soldado.

Things started off well for the new boss, Balboa winning a free kick down the right which Raúl Bravo swept in for Sergio Ramos to head into the net. And Baptista came very close to making it two when his free kick came back off the crossbar on the quarter hour mark. Rivaldo tested López with a free kick, but Schürrer had to scramble an effort from Robinho off the line and Soldado fired another shot over the bar before the break.

The locals drew level though just five minutes after the restart, Raúl Bravo's headed clearance from Djordjevic's cross only going as far as Bulut, who volleyed a spectacular shot back in to the net. Pantelis and Touré both went close soon afterwards, Rivaldo missed the easiest of chances after substitute Okkas set him up, and the ex Barcelona forward chipped another shot just wide of the mark. But with a draw seemingly on the cards, Touré cut in from the right past Sergio Ramos and laid the ball across to Rivaldo, who found time to poke the ball in to the net. Other than the prize money it didn't matter that much, but the new coach would have at least liked a positive result to start him off. There is a long road ahead.
