Zaragoza were surprisingly
knocked out of the UEFA Cup by an Austria Vienna side who took advantage of
poor defending to score two early goals and go through on the away goal rule.
Having drawn the first leg 1-1, Víctor Muñoz's side were hopeful
of pulling off a victory exactly one year to the day since they won the Copa
del Rey. But they were caught out in the seventh minute when Papac got ahead of
the defence to head Sionko's free kick past a surprised Luis García, and
before they had time to react Dosunmu produced a near carbon copy to put his
side two up.
The Spaniards now needed
three goals to win, and they were given a helping hand on the half hour mark
when keeper Didulica was sent off after bringing down Savio outside of the
area. But substitute keeper Safar came on to frustrate Alvaro, Savio and Villa,
and they went in at the break without making a dent in the scoreline.
Fifteen minutes in to the
second half though Villa got one back from a short Galletti free kick, and soon
afterwards the scores were level after Galletti beat the keeper following a
rebound. But although Víctor threw on all his reinforcements they were
unable to get the one more they needed, and Austria (who eliminated Athletic
Bilbao in the last round) add another Spanish side to laurels.
