Villarreal held on to draw
0-0 at Steaua Bucharest in their first leg game which had been postponed from a
week ago after a heavy snowstorm in Romania made conditions unplayable. Despite
the result it was a lively match, with the home side putting on the pressure in
the opening minutes but the Spaniards fighting back later in the first half.
Dica had a goal disallowed for the Romanians in the eighth minute, and Reina
saved a header from Christea later in the first half, but Figueroa brought a
good save out of Khomutovski and José Marí went close before the
break.
The pitch was cutting up
badly, but the two teams still tried to play attractive football and the hosts
could have taken the lead when Diinita headed Munteanu's cross wide, and then
missed the target when free in front of goal. The Spaniards were always
dangerous on the counterattack though, and Figueroa and Sorín could both
have won it for Pellegrini's side in the closing minutes. The return leg takes
place this Sunday, and Villarreal's league match with Osasuna has been
postponed to a date yet to be determined as a result. |
