Sevilla were held to a
disappointing 0-0 draw though by a depleted Parma side, and now face a tricky
visit to Italy next week. The Andalusians had the best of the play in the first
half, Martí and Jesuli both forcing good saves out of an active Frey
early on. And the keeper had to be at his best to stop efforts from substitutes
Makukula and Darío Silva after the restart. But the Italaians were ever
dangerous on the counterattack, Ruopolo almost surprising Esteban with an
overhead kick before the interval, and Marchionni testing the keeper with a
long shot in the second half.
Parma however proved they
were specialists in the Italian style "catenacchio", defending with almost
everyone behind the ball and picking up eight bookings from a lenient Dutch
referee, although Jesús Navas could have won it for the Spaniards when
he hit the post in the dying minutes. It was not to be though, and
Caparrós's side now need a score draw at least if they are to make it
through to the quarter finals for the first time in their history.
