Athletic Bilbao were
surprisingly knocked out of the competition after losing 1-2 at home to Austria
Vienna. After a scoreless draw in the first leg mid-week, the Basque side were
favourites to go through to a fourth round match with Zaragoza. And they
started well when Del Horno went close with a header and Etxeberría hit
the bar with a long cross.
With just under twenty
minutes on the clock Athletic went ahead from the penalty spot after the Polish
referee ruled that Dospel had cut out Ezquerro's pass with his hand inside the
area, Yeste tucking away the spot kick after Mr. Gilewski waved away protests
that the foul had taken place outside the box.
But the Austrians came back,
and Vastic shot wide a couple of times before Sionko picked up a short pass and
curled the ball over the head of Lafuente. On the away goal rule the visitors
were then ahead in the tie, and Bilbao threw everything forward. But Vienna
were ever dangerous on the counterattack, and after Kiesenebner had headed wide
and Lafuente saved from Dosunmu, Sionko forced his way through to poke a second
goal past the keeper.
Valverde threw on Llorente
and Tiko for the final twenty minutes or so, but although Yeste, Orbaiz and
Llorente all managed shots at goal, they were unable to get past Didulica.
Athletic's run of eleven games without defeat had come to an end, as had their
record of not having lost a European match in the San Mamés stadium
since 1983. Austria go on to play Zaragoza in the next round. |
