Villarreal had little
trouble seeing off Dynamo Kiev, beating the Ukranains 2-0 to set up a fourth
round tie with Valencia's conquerors Steaua Bucharest. After a 0-0 draw in the
first leg, Pellegrini's side seemed to have everything tied up when they raced
in to a two goal lead within the first half hour, Figueroa starting things off
with a header from José Marí's cross and Cazorla taking a return
pass from José Marí to chip keeper Shovkovskiy. Riquelme had been
involved throughout up to then, having two penalty appeals turned down, and he
almost got a third with a dipping free kick which the keeper just managed to
tip over the bar. But three minutes before the break the Argentine midfielder
was shown a second yellow card for kicking Kleber in retaliation for a hard
tackle, and suddenly Villarreal were down to ten men.
With Riquelme off the field
the free kick duties fell to Marcos Senna, and he too brought a fingertip save
out of Shovkovskiy on the stroke of half time. But Dynamo came back after the
restart, Kleber having a headed goal disallowed for a borderline offside, and
Gavrancic hitting the post following a corner, Reina stopping Rincón's
follow up shot on the line. The keeper also saved a long effort from Cernat as
Jozsef Szabo threw everything forward, but the Spaniards took advantage and
could have scored a third goal when Héctor Font and then Guayre failed
to convert their chances on rapid breakaways. |
