A good victory for Zaragoza,
who beat Turkish league leaders Fenerbahçe 2-1 to book their place in
the next round. Despite a one goal lead from the first leg Víctor
Muñoz was not taking any chances, and he put out a strong line up. And
it paid off when Galletti fired in a free kick off the far post to open the
scoring with only ten minutes gone. After that they handed over possession to
their opponents, although Luis García hardly had any work to do before
half time. And Savio could have increased the lead when he brought a good save
out of ex Barcelona keeper Rüstü midway through the first half.
The game opened up after the
break as the Turkish side pushed forward looking for the two goals they then
needed, leaving spaces at the back for the Spaniards to exploit. But although
both keepers were called upon a few times, there was no real danger until Savio
got Zaragoza's second goal, picking up a ball outside of the area and firing in
a long shot which went over Rüstü and in off the post. Alex finally
got one back for the visitors three minutes from the end, but by then they
needed three and it was scant consolation. The Spaniards go on to the last
sixteen, where they could face Athletic Bilbao if the Basques can beat Austria
Vienna on Sunday. |
