Villarreal survived a
difficult visit to a Dynamo Kiev side who were playing their first competitive
match in two months, coming away with a 0-0 draw which gives them the edge for
the return match next week. The Spaniards mastered the cold, snowy conditions,
and could have scored early on when Figueroa shot straight at the keeper. But
after that the Ukrainian side dominated the first half, albeit without really
causing problems for Reina until Kleber shot just wide on the stroke of half
time.
José Marí came
close to opening the scoring after the restart when a good run ended with him
shooting over the bar. But again the hosts took control and in the end it took
a sterling performance by Reina and his defence to keep them out, the keeper in
particular saving a late effort from substitute Ninkovic.
Pellegrini had left Riquelme
on the bench for this match, but he brought him on for the last quarter of an
hour, and used his last two substitutions to run down the clock. The result
gives his team a good chance of reaching the last sixteen and a possible
revenge match against neighbours Valencia, who knocked them out of the
competition at the semi-final stage last season. |
