Sevilla were beaten 1-0 by
Panathinaikos, and now have an uphill battle for the home leg in a week's time.
Fearing an opponent who had came in to the competition from the Champions'
League, Caparrós put out just about his best available side. And he was
right to be wary, as the Greek's new signing Gekas put Esteban to the test in
only the third minute of the game. The Spaniards were pegged back in their own
half for much of the first forty-five minutes, and only a shot just wide by
Jordi put Galinovic under any pressure. And Gekas came close to scoring before
the break, Esteban and Aitor Ocio combining in the end to keep him out.
Caparrós brought on
Fernando Sales for Jordi at the break, and later in the second half replaced a
tired Makukula with Antoñito. Still they didn't create any danger
though, and a quarter of an hour from the end Vintra got on the end of a corner
to crash a long shot into the roof of the net. It could have been worse had
Konstantinou not headed at Esteban when free in front of goal, but Baptista
could have had a penalty when brought down at the other end had the French
referee seen fit. In the end though there was only one goal in it, but without
the vital away strike, Sevilla will now have to win by two clear goals in the
return leg at the Sánchez Pizjuan next Thursday to be sure of going
through. |
