Zaragoza had a hard battle
against their Club Brugge, but in the end a 1-1 draw was enough to see them
through in second spot in their group. Víctor Muñoz's side needed
a point not to depend on the result between Utrecht and Austria Vienna, and a
full strength side dominated the early part of the match, with David Villa
bringing a good save out of Butina early on.
Luis García had to be
on his toes to keep out a couple of dangerous attacks, but a superb Cani saw
Butina save another effort before he found Savio with a long cross for him to
head the ball over the top of the keeper and in to the net. Butina was in
action again after the restart to keep out an effort from Movilla, but with
just over twenty minutes to go the Belgian side equalised after Ceh beat
García with a low shot.
At that point the scores
were level in the other group match as well, which would have meant that both
sides would go through if things stayed as they were. García had to keep
out a couple of efforts from Roelandts, but things seemed to swing in
Zaragoza's favour when Spilar was sent off for a second bookable offence. But
news that Austria had scored meant that Brugge would be out unless they won,
and there were some uncomfortable last few moments as they threw everything
forward in desperation. |
