Sevilla only needed to draw
at Lille to be first in their group, but a depleted side ended up losing by a
single goal and will now have to face a team from the Champions League in the
next round. With his side already qualified, Caparrós took a risk by
putting out a weakened line up in order to rest some of his key players for
Sunday's derby game against Betis, Notario returning in goal and Pablo Ruiz and
Jordi both getting a run out.
The French side had the best
chances early on, both Audel and Brunel going close, but Darío Silva
almost caught out Sylva with a header later on. Cabaye hit the bar with a
cross-come-shot, and Silva and Casquero both went close at the other end before
the break.
The locals took control at
the start of the second half though, Tafforeau, Debuchy and Audel all failing
to hit the target, and Caparrós brought on Jesuli to liven things up.
The ex Celta winger did carve out a couple of chances for his side, but
thirteen minutes from the end Moussilou connected with Brunel's cross to head
home what was to be the winning goal. Lille did end the game with ten men when
Schmitz picked up a second booking, but by then it too late for the Andalusians
to react. |
