Villarreal beat the bottom
team in their group Egaleo 4-0, but a victory by Middlesbrough over Partizan
Belgrade in the other group match meant they missed out on top spot. With
Forlán, Figueroa and Sorin ineligible to play and his side already sure
of a place in the next round, Pellegrini put out a weakened line up,
López Vallejo getting a run out in goal and several of the club's
talented youngsters in the squad.
And it only took under 21
international Héctor Font twelve minutes to open the scoring, forcing
his way past three tackles and getting a bit of luck to find the ball at his
feet in a position to score. And Guayre made it two shortly before the break
when he cut across the front of the area past a couple of defenders before
beating Sidibe.
In the absence of Riquelme,
Font was charged with the creative play, and he set up Javi Venta for him to
get a third goal just a few minutes after the restart. And a few minutes later
Cazorla also got in on the act, sliding the ball into the net from close up
after Guayre's shot was blocked. A comfortable win for the Spanish side,
although their second place means they await what might be a tricky draw
against one of the sides dropping out of the Champions League, albeit with the
second leg at home. |
