Sevilla qualified for the
next round of the UEFA cup after beating AEK Athens 3-2, although it took a
last minute penalty from Baptista to do so. The Andalusians had a couple of
chances early on, but went behind when Lyberopoulos headed past Esteban
following a free kick in the tenth minute. Baptista equalised though soon
afterwards from Renato's corner, and Antoñito volleyed them in front
before the break.
The Spaniards seemed to have
things wrapped up against A Greek side who had lost their first two group
matches. But Giorgiopoulos levelled the scores again just a minute after the
restart with a spectacular shot, and could easily have taken the lead on the
counter-attack later on as Sevilla threw everything forward.
But with a minute to go
young substitute Kepa Blanco was brought down in the area, and Baptista stepped
up to save them having to win their last match against Lille in a fortnight's
time. Caparrós's side can now relax, although they would still like to
beat the French side to win their group and thereby avoid a tricky tie in the
next round against one of the sides eliminated from the Champions League.
