Athletic Bilbao beat Steaua Bucharest 1-0 in their day four match, and now need a draw in their last game at Standard Liège to be sure of reaching the next round. The visitors, managed by Walter Zenga, got off to a quick start, and Aranzubia had to save from Munteanu in the opening minutes. But Athletic soon took control of midfield, and Ezquerro could have scored on two occasions before Exteberría put them ahead on the stroke of half time with a spectacular volley after Urzaiz set him up.

Steaua came out strongly again after the break, with Christea shooting just wide and Aranzubia saving from Ogararu. Urzaiz could have extended the lead if Khomutovski had not kept him out though, and Ezquerro again failed to convert a couple of chances which would have settled the crowd. But in the end it was up to Aranzubia to make sure of the three points, the keeper stopping late efforts from Tristea and Dica to make sure of the three points.
