A good result for Sevilla,
who saved a point against Zenit in sub-zero temperatures in Saint Petersburg.
Joaquín Caparrós's side came close to taking the lead in the
eighth minute when Baptista headed against the post, but otherwise they were up
against it for most of the first half. Esteban saved well from Kerzhakov and
Arshvin shot just wide of goal before the Russians took the lead, Arshvin
pouncing on a loose ball near to goal after Aitor Ocio tackled Bystrov to shoot
low past the keeper.
The local pressure continued
after the break, with Denisov shooting wide and Esteban almost giving away a
goal when trying to dribble round Arshvin. The introduction of Carlitos for
Darío Silva was a turning point though, the diminutive striker forcing
Malafeev to tip the ball over the bar from a header soon after coming on. And
when the defence failed to clear the resulting corner, Carlitos was there to
turn the ball back in for Baptista to steer a header wide of the keeper.
The result takes Sevilla on
to four points having played one games less than the two leaders Lille and
Zenit, and they should be able to secure their place in the next stage when
they play AEK in a week's time. |
