Spain completed the
formalities, beating Honduras 3-0 in their last group match to top the table
with maximum points. With his side already qualified for the last sixteen as
group C champions, Iñaki Sáez used the occasion to rest some of
his first choice players, giving a first run out to Manu, Agus and Braulio. But
even so they took the lead when Jonathan chipped the keeper in the fifth
minute, and David Silva made it two shortly before half when he picked up a
return pass from Víctor to score his fourth of the competition.
The Central Americans were
not going to give in easily despite having lost their first two games without
scoring a goal, and Nuñez hit the bar with a free kick before the half
time whistle. But midway through the second half Víctor headed the third
from a corner, and the coach gave a run out to Roberto for the last quarter of
an hour. Unfortunately the Atlético keeper only lasted three minutes
before giving away a penalty and getting himself sent off, but Jonathan took
over in goal and added to his ever growing reputation by saving Nuñez's
spot kick. |
