An astounding result for
Spain in their second group game, a 7-0 win over Chile ensuring them of a place
in the last sixteen. The South Americans had scored seven themselves against
Honduras in their opening tie, and they looked like difficult opponents on
paper. But after a brief flurry of activity in Ribas's goalmouth, Llorente got
on the end of Gavilán's cross to head his side into the lead. Cesc had
to clear a header from Montesinos off the line with the keeper beaten three
minutes before the break, but a couple of minutes later Chile were left with
ten men when Jara picked up a second booking.
The second half started
similar to the first, Robusté heading Cesc's free kick past Arias
against the run of play in the sixth minute. But after that the floodgates
opened, Llorente finishing off an excellent run by Gavilán to make it
three, and David Silva coming on to combine with Cesc and get a fourth.
Llorente completed his hat-trick ten minutes from the end after a good team
effort, and connected with Zapater's centre two minutes later to take his tally
to four for the night and five in the competition. And Silva collected a pass
from Cesc to complete the rout and take Iñaki Sáez's side to the
top of their group. |
