Navalmora de la Mata,
Cáceres. Spain 's under 19 side followed in the footsteps of their under
17 colleagues, failing to qualify for this summer's European finals after
losing 0-1 to France on home soil. Gines Meléndez's side came in to the
last of their group games only needing to draw thanks to a better goal
difference than their opponents. And it was end to end stuff in the first half,
Gouffran testing Roberto in the first minute and David Silva and Carmona
bringing good saves out of Lloris before the break.
Jurado just failed to beat
the keeper after the restart, and a minute later the French side took the lead
after slack defending let in Gourcuff to score. Lloris saved again from a
header by substitute Miguel just a minute after he came on, and Spain threw
everything forward as their opponents were left with nine men when Djedje and
then Cabaye picked up second yellow cards. But they could not find a way
through, and they could have lost by a bigger margin had Diaby not shot wide
when alone in front of Roberto near the end. |
