A last second goal by team
captain Robusté gave Spain a narrow victory over Turkey in their second
group match. Both sides came in to the game with wins in their opening ties,
but it was Armando Ufarte's side which got off to the best start, Juanfran
combining with Víctor to open the scoring and Silva heading a second
with only a quarter of an hour on the clock. Víctor could have made it
three a few minutes later, but tournament top scorer Ali Öztürk
pulled one back from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time after Albiol
brought him down.
Spain's domination continued
after the break, with Özcan saving from Silva and Víctor missing an
easy chance, and substitute Soldado heading against the bar. But Turkey didn't
give up, and they thought they had saved a point when Aksu burst through to
score with three minutes to go. But Robusté headed the winner following
a corner to take his side through to the semi-final stage, more than likely as
group champions, and also to make sure of qualification for next summer's youth
World Cup as one of the first three teams in their group. |
