Champions' League, second round first leg
Barcelona 2 - Chelsea 1
Barcelona came back
from a goal down to beat Chelsea 2-1, leaving the tie evenly balanced
going in to the second leg. Although the Catalans did all the attacking early
on, they were caught out on a quick breakaway with just over a half an hour on
the clock when Belletti turned Duff's cross past his own keeper. Drogba should
have made it two just a couple of minutes later, but the French striker got
himself sent off early in the second half after picking up a second booking for
a clumsy tackle on Valdés. Rijkaard brought on Maxi López midway
through the second half, and the new man made the difference, picking up a
short pass from Eto'o to beat Cech just two minutes after making his
appearance, and then setting up Eto'o soon afterwards for him to score a
second. (23.02.05)
Real Madrid 1 - Juventus 0
Real Madrid took a
small step towards a place in the quarter finals after beating Juventus
1-0 in their first leg match. Raúl came close to giving the Spaniards
the lead midway through the first half when he connected with a Roberto Carlos
cross to fire a shot against the bar, but only a few minutes later his side
were in front, Iván Helguera heading Beckham's free kick wide of Buffon.
Casillas had to keep out efforts from Olivera and Ibrahimovic after the
restart, but Samuel could have increased the lead when he headed against the
upright with a quarter of an hour to go. Having prevented their opponents from
scoring away from home though, Madrid must fancy their chances in the return
leg in Italy in two weeks' time. (22.02.05) |
