Champions' League, day 4
Dynamo
Kiev 2 - Real Madrid 2
Real Madrid came back
from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Dynamo Kiev and keep themselves en
route for a place in the last sixteen. García Remón's side were
caught out early on when Yussuf's shot ballooned off Pavón past Casillas
for a first goal, and then Verpakovskis cut past Salgado to make it two midway
through the first half. But Figo found Raúl a few minutes later for him
to pull one back, and the Portuguese midfielder levelled the scores on the
stroke of half time from the penalty spot after Ronaldo was brought down by El
Kaddouri. With Bayer Leverkusen also drawing at Roma in the other group game,
Madrid, Kiev and Bayer share the lead at the top of the table, all with seven
points. (03.11.04)
Deportivo 0 - Liverpool 1
Deportivo La
Coruña are on the verge of elimination from the competition though
after losing 0-1 to Rafa Benítez's Liverpool. Irureta's side fell
behind on the quarter hour mark when Andrade put through his own net trying to
clear a cross from Riise, and never really caused any problems for Kirkland in
the visiting goal after that. And it could have been worse had Molina not made
important saves from Riise and Luis García either side of half time.
Although they still have a mathematical chance of qualification, Depor ended
the day with only two points, having not scored even one goal in their four
games to date. (03.11.04)
Barcelona
2 - AC Milan 1
A magnificent last minute
goal from Ronaldinho gave Barcelona a 2-1 win over AC Milan on
Tuesday night. Frank Rijkaard's side had fallen behind with a quarter of an
hour gone when Shevchenko ran on to Pirlo's long ball to beat Víctor
Valdés, but Eto'o levelled the scores before half time after Xavi set
him up. Barça had most of the play after the restart, with Dida making
vital saves from Deco and Xavi, but Valdés also had to keep out Cafu and
Shevchenko at the other end. It looked though as if the Italians were going to
hold on for a draw until the Brazilian star danced past two defenders and
struck an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. The two sides share
the lead at the top of their group, and both only need a point in their next
two games to ensure their qualification for the knock-out stage.

Inter
Milan 0 - Valencia 0
Valencia restored
their pride and kept their slim hopes of classification alive after holding
Inter Milan to a 0-0 draw. The Spaniards were looking to take revenge
for the 1-5 drubbing from two weeks ago, but they were pushed back right from
the start, and only some excellent saves by Cañizares, in particular
from Verón and Martins, kept the scores level at the break. Di Vaio did
miss an easy chance at the other end when free on goal, but otherwise the
Italians dominated, and Martins fired one shot over the bar and then hit the
woodwork when it would have been easier to score. Nerves frayed in the final
minutes though, and Adriano was sent off after a clash with Caneira. But
Ranieri's side had a vital point, and could still go through if they win their
last two games and Werder Bremen don't beat Inter Milan in their next match.
