Champions' League, day 3
AC Milan
1 - Barcelona 0
The city of Milan stopped
Spain's top two sides in their tracks on Wednesday night, both Italian sides
winning their matches to top their respective tables on maximum points.
Barcelona put up a good fight against AC Milan, with Larsson
hitting the bar early on and Iniesta doing likewise a minute from the end, but
a headed goal from Shevchenko on the half hour mark gave the hosts a 1-0
victory. Barça stay in second place in the table though, and have a
chance to get their own back when the fixtures are reversed in a fortnight's
time. (20.10.04)
Valencia
1 - Inter Milan 5
A disastrous result though
for Valencia, who are now down in third spot in group G after a 1-5
thrashing by Inter Milan. Nobody expected the final result when the
first half finished without goals, but Stankovic and Vieri gave a first warning
when they put the visitors two goals up only four minutes after the restart.
Aimar got one back after Di Vaio set him up a few minutes later, but Van der
Meyde, Adriano and Cruz all scored in the last quarter of an hour to give
Ranieri's side one of the biggest hidings in their history. (20.10.04)
Real
Madrid 1 - Dynamo Kiev 0
A goal by Michael Owen late
in the first half gave Real Madrid a belaboured victory against
Dynamo Kiev. The England striker got on the end of a cross from Ronaldo
ten minutes before the break to score his first goal for his new club and take
them in to a three way tie at the top of their group with Kiev and Bayer
Leverkusen. It was not an easy win though, and only a great performance by Iker
Casillas kept the Ukrainians from scoring. But Madrid too had their chances,
and Zidane, Ronaldo and Raúl could easily have extended their lead in an
entertaining match. (19.10.04)
Liverpool
0 - Deportivo La Coruña 0
A battling performance by
Deportivo La Coruña, who came away from Anfield with a valuable
point after drawing 0-0 with Liverpool. Only a solid performance by the
Spanish defence kept the scores level at the break, with Molina and Manuel
Pablo in particular instrumental in stopping efforts from Cissé, Baros
and Luis García. Riise though had to clear a header from César
off the line with the keeper beaten, and Valerón missed an easy chance
soon after the restart. But a point was enough for Depor, who will be hosts to
Rafa Benítez's side in their next match. (19.10.04) |
