Intertoto cup, third round second leg
Both Spanish clubs won
through to the semi-finals of the competition, although neither had it easy
against opponents who proved to be more worthy adversaries than expected.
Villarreal kicked off the first match with a slender 1-0 lead from the
first leg against Spartak Moscow, but within ten minutes the tie was
level after Pavlyuchenko opened the scoring for the Russians. However Sonny
Anderson scored a vital away goal on the half hour mark, and although
Pavlyuchenko restored the lead soon afterwards, Roger made it 2-2 seven minutes
after the restart. Villarreal have another tricky fixture in the semi-finals
though against Germany's Hamburg, with the first leg at home next Wednesday.
With a 2-4 victory from the
away leg, Atlético Madrid didn't foresee any problems in their
tie later in the evening against Zlin. However the Czech side surprised
César Ferrando's team with a goal from Malar early on, and when Kroca
made it 0-2 with twenty minutes to go an upset was on the cards.
Atlético held on though to go through on the away goal rule and set up a
semi-final against OFK Belgrade, who they visit in the first leg midweek. If
they do get through the next round they could face Villarreal in an all Spanish
final after the draw paired them together earlier in the month. (24.07.04)
