Villarreal beat
Atlético Madrid in an exciting penalty shoot-out to take their second
Intertoto cup title in successive years and qualify for this season's UEFA cup
competition. Pellegrini's side were clear favourites after a two goal win in
the first leg, but the home side completely dominated the first half and were
unlucky not to go ahead. However Ibagaza finally beat Reina two minutes after
the restart, and García Calvo levelled the tie with a header ten minutes
later.
Atlético should have
gone in front when they were awarded a penalty after Fernando Torres was
brought down by Quique Alvarez, but the referee did not allow the usual penalty
taker Torres time to recover from the resulting injury and Reina saved Jorge's
kick. With no further score after thirty minutes extra time, the game went to
penalties, but misses by García Calvo, Nano and Arizmendi in front of a
confident Reina meant that Villarreal went through on spot kicks.
