Atlético Madrid won
through to a final clash with Villarreal in their first ever appearance in the
Intertoto cup after beating OFK Belgrade 5-1 on aggregate. César
Ferrando's side were already close to qualifying after their first leg away
victory against OFK Belgrade, but after almost throwing away a similar lead the
round before against Zlin, they were taking no chances. Fernando Torres went
close to scoring with only five minutes on the clock, but made no mistake four
minutes later in a move started by Ibagaza, the young striker diving to head
the ball past Damjanac from Aguilera's cross.
Atlético relaxed too
quickly though, and Aragoneses had to be at his best to save from Bozovic only
a minute or so after the goal. But from then on the visitors didn't put up much
of a fight, and six minutes in to the second half Aguilera got a second goal,
striking a first time volley low across the keeper after Musampa crossed the
ball in from the left wing. Torres and García Calvo came close to adding
to the scoreline later on, but the tie was already in the bag, and
Atlético go on to play their first "European" final since they lost the
Cupwinners' cup final to Dynamo Kiev eighteen years ago. The real prize though
is a place in the UEFA cup, and if they can get past Villarreal they will be
there. |
