Villarreal are on track for
another place in the Intertoto final after knocking out a difficult Spartak
Moscow on their artificial pitch in the Russian capital. Pellegrini's side were
defending a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg, but within ten minutes the tie
was level after Pavlyuchenko picked up a rebound off a defender to open the
scoring.
The Spanish forwards were
finding it difficult on the slippery pitch, and Sonny Anderson missed an easy
chance when he failed to keep his feet. But a few minutes later the Brazilian
striker did take his chance to score a vital away goal and swing things in
favour of his side.
Only three minutes
afterwards though, Pavlyuchenko restored the lead when he headed a centre from
Samedov past Reina. But Roger made it 2-2 seven minutes after the restart after
a good team move to put the game beyond Spartak's reach, and after that the
Spaniards controlled the game up until the final whistle.
Villarreal have another
tricky fixture in the semi-finals though against Germany's Hamburg, with the
first leg at home next Wednesday, and if they get through that they may have to
face Atlético Madrid in the final.
Report to follow.
