With a 2-4 victory from the
away leg, Atlético Madrid didn't foresee any problems in their second
leg tie later against Zlin. However the Czech side surprised César
Ferrando's team with two goals which levelled the scoreline, and the Spaniards
only qualified in the end on the away goal rule.
With Luccin and Colsa yet to
join the squad, Ferrando played Simeone, Jorge and Ibagaza in midfield and
Paunovic up front. But they were unable to make any inroads into the visiting
defence, and with eleven minutes on the clock thery found themselves behind
when Malar took advantage of a defensive slip to score.
Paunovic could have made it
all square, but Leo Franco had to be at his best to keep out Kroca before the
break. Ferrando had been saving Fernando Torres, who had only returned from
vacation three days before, but ten minutes in to the second half he was forced
to bring him on. And the young striker immediately made his mark creating two
or three chances, although he too was unable to beat Baranek.
Worse was to come though, as
Kroca got on the end of a free kick to head a second goal twenty minutes from
the end. One more and Atlético would be out, and the fans showed their
discontent with whistles and catcalls against their players.
But Atlético held on
to go through on the away goal rule and set up a semi-final against OFK
Belgrade, who they visit in the first leg midweek. If they do get through the
next round they could face Villarreal in an all Spanish final after the draw
paired them together earlier in the month. But on today's performance, that is
not very likely. |
