Villarreal completed the
formalities tonight, following up their three goal victory from the first leg
against Odense with a 2-0 win. New manager Manuel Pellegrini wasn't taking any
chances, putting out the same starting line up as in the first match, and they
went ahead midway through the first half when José Marí got on
the end of Sonny Anderson's cross to head past Jensen.
Héctor Font added a
second before the break, leaving a defender for dead before shooting inside the
post to stake his claim for a place in the first team squad this season. After
that Villarreal slowed things down, and Reina's goal was never under threat up
until the final whistle. New signing Gonzalo Rodríguez made his debut
twenty minutes from the end.
The Spaniards have a tricky
second round tie though next weekend against Spartak Moscow, with the first leg
at home. But they learnt after that match that worse was to come, as the draw
on Monday for last two rounds set up a possible final with Atlético
Madrid, assuming both get that far. |
