A good start for Villarreal
in their first official match of the season, the Spaniards running out 0-3
winners against OB Odense in this first leg of their Intertoto cup tie. New
manager Manuel Pellegrini had only had one week to work with his squad after
their return from vacations, and there was concern that they might struggle
against a team who had already scored seven goals against Ballymena in the
first round.
Pellegrini could count
though on a strong squad, the early end to the season allowing his players to
take their vacations and return in time for the game, and only Riquelme and
Roger were unavailable. The match had to be switched to Aarhus as the Odense
ground was not considered apt by UEFA, but even so the Danes settled quickly
and Hensen and Miti went close early on. But a Battaglia free kick and another
effort from Anderson warned their opponents that Villarreal were back in the
game.
Odense got off to a good
start after the break, and a Lindrup free kick brushed Reina's post. Pellegrini
decided to make his first change though, bringing on youngster Santi Cazorla
for Héctor Font, and within a few minutes they were two up, Sonny
Anderson opening his account for the new season and then Cazorla himself
getting the second.
A second substitute
Víctor had a shot well saved by Onyszko a few minutes later, but it was
third change Guayre who wrapped things up on a quick breakaway just a minute
after coming on to leave his side with one foot in the third round. Should they
get through, their next match could be a tricky one against Spartak Moscow, who
beat Croatian side Kamen 4-1 in their first leg. |
