La Liga's last
representative in the Champions League Real Madrid were beaten by Juventus on
Wednesday night, and for the first time in twelve years there will be no
Spanish side in the quarter final draw. Defending a one goal lead from the
first leg, Luxemburgo's team held on in the Delle Alpi stadium in the opening
minutes, Casillas saving well from Ibrahimovic and Del Piero. Ronaldo was a
threat on the counter-attack though, and he went close twice either side of
half time, bending a shot just wide of the post before the break and bringing a
good save out of Buffon after the restart.
Early in the second half
Capello decided to bring on Trezeguet, who had not started the game as he was
just recovering from a cold. It proved to be an inspired move, as the French
striker hooked a spectacular overhead kick past Casillas after Ibrahimovic had
headed back a Camoranesi cross a quarter of an hour from the end to level the
tie. Ronaldo got the ball in the net a few minutes later only for the strike to
be ruled out for offside, and the game went in to extra time.
Both sides had their
opportunities as the adrenalin flowed, Zalayeta having the best chance with an
effort which flashed past the post. As tempers frayed a bad foul by Tacchinardi
and a retaliatory kick by Ronaldo left both teams with ten men as referee
Markus Merk showed a red card to each of them. But with a penalty shoot out on
the cards, Zalayeta latched on to a poor clearance from Raúl Bravo to
fire a low shot past Casillas and knock the Spanish side out of the competition
for the second time in three years. |
