Barcelona came back from a
goal down to beat Chelsea 2-1, leaving the tie evenly balanced going in to the
second leg. The Catalans did all the attacking early on, with Ronaldinho and
Et'o both carving out chances, but they were unable to breakdown the visitors'
well disciplined defence. And they were caught out with just over a half an
hour on the clock when Duff got free on a quick breakaway, and Belletti turned
his cross past his own keeper under pressure from Joe Cole and Drogba.
Drogba should have made it
two just a couple of minutes later when he got ahead of the defence, but he
sent his shot just wide of the post. However the French striker got himself
sent off ten minutes in to the second half when he picked up a second booking
after crashing in to Valdés, leaving his side with ten men. Rijkaard
brought on Iniesta and then Maxi López, and the new men made the
difference, Iniesta testing Cech with a long shot before combining with Eto'o
to set up the Argentine striker to score a vital equaliser.
By now Barça were
throwing everything forward, and they got a second goal just seven minutes
later, Maxi's attempted shot missing the target but falling into the path of
Eto'o, who squeezed between two defenders to fire the ball wide of Cech. Terry
had to head out a dangerous Deco shot soon afterwards, and Maxi, Xavi and Eto'o
all did their best to give their side a two goal cushion for the return match.
Chelsea's defence held firm though, and everything now depends on who can get
the edge in Stamford Bridge in a fortnight's time. |
