A Champions League to forget
for Deportivo La Coruña, who were hammered 0-5 by Monaco in their last
match and bow out of Europe with the humiliating record of being the first club
to fail to score in all six matches of the league stage. Monaco needed a win to
be sure of reaching the knock out stage, and Chevantón put them on the
way to victory after ex Barcelona striker Saviola put him through midway
through the first half. Capdevila had a penalty appeal turned down and Pandiani
headed straight at Roma as Depor pushed for the equaliser, but they were hit by
two more goals before the break, Givet hooking the ball back over the defence
after they failed to clear a corner, and Saviola adding the third after leaving
Pablo Amo for dead.
It could have been four
before the break had Bernardi found the target with a long chip, but Pandiani
came close to pulling one back after the restart when Roma dived low to get a
hand to his shot. A few minutes later though Maicón beat reserve keeper
Munúa again as the static defence allowed him to run through and turn in
Chevantón's corner, and substitute Adebayor got a fifth a quarter of an
hour from the end, again after good work by Chevantón.
Still the local fans got
behind their side to urge them on, and Luque (who had been rested at the start
together with other key players) almost got the goal Depor so badly wanted to
at least open their account, Roma saving his late free kick, but Adebayor
missed a sitter at the other end soon afterwards. Once again Depor had been
hammered by the French side who put eight past them in one game last season,
and it was an unfitting end for the likes of Fran and Mauro Silva (who didn't
even come on) who were probably making their last appearances in a European
tie. At least they can now concentrate on improving their position in the
league. |
