Bayer: Butt; Juan, Nowotny, Roque Junior; Schneider, Ramelow, Babic, Placente; Krzynowek (Freier 76'), Berbatov, Voronin (Balitsch 83'). 3-4-3.

Goals:
0-1. 36. Berbatov. From close up after Samuel headed ball back into his path.
1-1. 70. Raúl. Turned ball into net after passing move between Figo and Zidane.

Another disappointing performance by Real Madrid, who could only draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the fifth day of the league stage. García Remón's side will now have to beat Roma behind closed doors in a fortnight's time to be sure of qualifying for the last sixteen.

The Galacticos were hoping to bounce back after their defeat at Barcelona at the weekend, but once again they were out of sorts and fell behind ten minutes before the break after a dreadful mistake by Samuel after Voronin had headed against the bar, the Argentine defender only managing to head the ball back towards his own goal where Berbatov gratefully tucked it into the net.

Casillas had to be at his best to keep the German side from increasing their lead, but eventually Madrid started to carve out some chances, with substitute Morientes somehow managing to head wide from only three yards out with the goal at his mercy.

Raúl finally levelled the scores after Figo took a return pass from Zidane to set him up, equalling his club president Alfredo Di Stefano's record of 49 goals in European competitions. But try as they might they couldn't find the winning goal they needed Butt tipping a vicious shot from Roberto Carlos for a corner, Ronaldo seeing his shot deflected by Roque Junior onto the post, and Butt keeping out another close range effort from Raúl after a Roberto Carlos free kick came off the defensive wall.

Even so Figo should have wrapped things up from the penalty spot after Zidane was tripped by Juan on the edge of the area, but for once even he couldn't resolve matters, Butt getting a hand to his spot kick to turn it over the bar. And it could have been worse when Babic had a free shot at goal in the dying minutes, but he failed to hit the target.

A bad day again though for Madrid, not helped by the regulation idiots in the crowd who once again jeered Bayer's black players, and if they don't get themselves together for the next match they may find themselves playing in the UEFA cup when European football resumes after the winter break.
