Deportivo La Coruña are on the verge of elimination from the competition after losing 0-1 to Rafa Benítez's Liverpool. Irureta's side were up against it right from the start when Molina had to save from Luis García, and they fell behind on the quarter hour mark when Andrade put through his own net trying to clear a cross from Riise after good work by Biscan, who was a last minute substitute for the injured Xabi Alonso. Depor's only attempts at goal in the first half were a long shot by Sergio early on and a dangerous run by Pandiani which he couldn't finish off, and the English side could have been further ahead at the break if Molina and then César had not cleared consecutive shots from Riise.

Depor came forward after the restart, Kirkland saving a Luque free kick and half time substitute Pablo Amo heading over the bar. Irureta decided to make a second change on the hour mark, bringing on Diego Tristán, but his decision to take off a forward (Pandiani) when he needed all the strike force he could was unpopular with the crowd. Tristán did have an effort cleared by Hyypia, but otherwise the Galicians didn't really trouble Kirkland, and Luis García should have wrapped things up more than once in the closing minutes. Although they still have a mathematical chance of qualification, Depor ended the day with only two points, having not scored even one goal in their four games to date (own goals aside), and they now need a near miracle to make it into the last sixteen.
