Bayer Leverkusen got their
revenge for their defeat in the 2002 final of the Champions' League, beating
Real Madrid 3-0 in their opening match. The German side set out their stall
early when Casillas had to save from a Freier header with less than a minute on
the clock, and four minutes later Berbatov hit the post with the keeper beaten.
Ronaldo crashed a shot against the bar on the half hour mark after Salgado put
him through, but before the break Bayer were in front when Krzynowek's long
shot came off the post and bounced in off the back of Casillas.
The visitors lost Zidane to
a shoulder injury just before half time, but even with Morientes, Raúl
and Ronaldo on the park they were unable to score. And within ten minutes of
the restart Augenthaler's side had wrapped things up, França bending a
shot past Casillas for the second goal and setting up the third himself, Samuel
trying to cut out his cross but only succeeding in lifting it over the keeper
to Berbatov, who had the easiest of tasks to turn it in to the empty net.
An angry Camacho took off
Ronaldo and Figo, but still there was no place for Michael Owen. But Madrid's
only scoring opportunity came when Raúl was brought down by Roque Junior
in the area late on, referee Graham Poll turning down appeals for a penalty. It
would not have made much of a difference though, and the Spaniards left the
field a few minutes later with their heads hanging low. With disappointing
performances in their opening league matches (despite two narrow wins) and Roma
to come in two weeks' time, Camacho has some work to do. |
