Barcelona opened the new European campaign with a tricky tie against Celtic, who had not lost at home in Europe in almost three years, and who had knocked them out of the UEFA cup last season. The start of the match was delayed by over half an hour due to turnstile problems before kick off. But when things finally got going, Frank Rijkaard's new look side produced some flowing football, and went ahead midway through the first half when Ronaldinho set up Deco.

The Spaniards should have extended the lead when Giuly was stopped at the last minute by Balde on the stroke of half time, and Ronaldinho had a second half penalty saved by Marshall after Giuly was pushed over by McNamara (which probably should have earned the defender a red card).

Let off the hook, the Scots equalised through half time substitute Sutton after Camara crossed in from the right. But Larsson came on to sink his old side, combining with Belletti to set up Giuly to restore the lead, and scoring the third himself after Thompson failed to spot his old team mate when trying to head back to his keeper. Balde had a goal disallowed for offside as Celtic tried to get back, but there was little time left and their impressive home record finally came to an end.
