Two late goals from substitute Morientes were enough to give Real Madrid a convincing lead against Wisla Krakow in this first leg of the qualifying round. With the Polish side having already scored eleven goals in their previous round, Camacho was not taking any risks and put out a full strength line up, with Helguera playing in midfield and Samuel making his debut alongside Pavón in defence.

Madrid seemed to be well on the way when Majdan had to beat away a Roberto Carlos shot and Klos almost turned Figo's cross into his own net in the opening minutes. Zidane should have scored on the half hour mark when free in front of goal, but a minute later Casillas had to be at his best to stand up to Uche when he broke free.

By now Wisla were starting to lose respect for their rivals, and Cantoro and Zurawski both shot just wide. Raúl and Zidane both went close at the other end, but Camacho was losing his patience and opted for a double change, bringing on Morientes and Guti for Ronaldo and Zidane.

It proved to be a providential decision, and only four minutes later Morientes opened the scoring when he forced the ball over the line with his shin from Beckham's bouncing cross. With Samuel commanding in defence Madrid were halfway home, and Morientes wrapped things up in the last minute, connecting with Roberto Carlos's low cross to drill the ball past Majdan.
