Valencia cruised through to
the last four of the competition with a comfortable win over Bordeaux. With a
1-2 advantage from the first leg and the team pushing for the league title,
Rafa Benítez was able to rest several of his top players and give a run
out to some of his reserves, Navarro, Garrido, Canobbio and Xisco all coming in
to the side. But even so they were never really under threat, and after an
early burst of pressure from the French side the locals took control, Angulo
and Xisco both coming close to scoring before the break.
Eventually Valencia got the
goal they were looking for, Pellegrino putting them in front seven minutes in
to the second half when he headed home Rufete's corner, a carbon copy of the
goal he scored a few days before in the league. Rufete added a second himself
nine minutes later from Angulo's cross, and although Eduardo Costa pulled one
back soon afterwards, the Spaniards could have won by a bigger margin when
Xisco's shot was cleared off the line. When Cañizares tipped a long shot
by Francia over the bar it was all over, and Valencia go on to meet neighbours
Villarreal in the semi-final. Spain are sure of a finalist in Gothenburg this
year. Which one will it be? |
