Villarreal carried on their great run in their first ever appearance in Europe competitions with a 1-1 draw against a Celtic side who had knocked out Barcelona in the last round. Paquito's team took an early lead when Josico headed Roger's cross down past Marshall, and could have scored one or two more as they dominated the first half, with José Marí and Sonny Anderson in particular putting efforts wide and a Riquelme free kick being deflected over the top. The Scottish side had their chances too though, Reina tipping a Petrov volley on to the post and saving well from Sutton just before the break.

Marshall saved from Sonny Anderson and Battaglia hit the bar as Villarreal kept up the pressure after the restart, but Larsson had a goal disallowed for hand ball when he charged down Reina's clearance only a minute later. By now Martin O'Neill's team were getting back into the game, and Larsson finally headed the equaliser past a committed Reina from Agathe's cross with twenty minutes to go.

The visiting keeper had to be at his best after that to keep out strikes from Agathe and Sutton, and in a frenetic last few minutes he made two vital saves, first from Larsson's free kick and then from Sutton on the follow up, Ballesteros finally heading the ball off the line as play continued. Celtic had extended their unbeaten home record to 77 games, but the Spaniards must now be favourite to go through to a possible meeting with neighbours Valencia in the semi-final.
