Villarreal's great run in
Europe continues, and they made it through to a quarter final clash with Celtic
after beating Roma 3-2 on aggregate. The Italians scored early on, Emerson
crashing a long shot past Reina, and could have got more in the first half,
Reina saving from Totti (returning to the side after a back injury) and Candela
missing an easy chance. The Spaniards' only reply was a shot from Sonny
Anderson which went way over the bar.
Emerson and Totti combined
five minutes after the restart to set up Cassano for a second though, and the
tie was all square with extra time a possibility. Paquito surprised everyone
taking off Javi Venta, who had only come on twelve minutes earlier, to put on
another attacking player Guayre. The move worked though, and Sonny Anderson got
on the end of José Marí's cross and turn the ball wide of
Pelizzoli. Roma's nerves frayed at the end, and they were left with ten men
when Zebina was shown a red card with two minutes to go. Villarreal were in to
the last eight, leaving another of Europe's best sides trailing in their wake.
