Mallorca threw away a second
half lead and ended up losing 4-1 at Newcastle. Luis Aragonés's side had
the better of the first half, with Eto'o testing Given a couple of times, and
they went ahead after the break when Correa headed past the keeper on the
follow up after Eto'o hit the bar.
The English side came back
though with four goals in just over a quarter of an hour to give them a lead
which should see them through to the quarter finals. Bellamy started things off
from a rapid counter-attack, and four minutes later Shearer made it two when he
headed home Robert's corner.
Worse was to come though for
the Balearic islanders, and Robert scored a third goal for Bobby Robson's team
with a long free kick which Leo Franco should have stopped. The Spaniards were
left with ten men seven minutes from the end after Edu Moya picked up a second
booking for a foul on Shearer, and from the resulting free kick Robert whipped
the ball in for Bramble to volley home a fourth. |
