A surprise result in Turkey,
where the competition's revelation side Glençlerbirligi held on to an
early lead to beat Valencia 1-0. The Ankara based side had already knocked out
Blackburn, Sporting Lisbon and Parma in earlier rounds, but even so Rafa
Benítez decided to put out a second string line up in a competition
which he considers to be a lower priority than the Spanish league, with only
Ayala, Carboni and Albelda in the starting line up from his first choice
players.
They paid the price though
in the twelfth minute when Ayala was adjudged to have fouled Ozkan in the area,
and Daems scored from the resulting penalty to put the locals ahead. Oliveira
and Juan Sánchez both went close after the break as the Spaniards pushed
for an equaliser, but without the inspiration of the injured Aimar they were
not able to beat a well-ordered defence, and now have an uphill battle in the
second leg in a fortnight's time. |
