A great second half
performance took Villarreal through to the fourth round in their first ever
appearance in a European competition. Galatasaray needed to win after the 2-2
draw in Turkey last week, and they come out bravely, Batista striking the post
with a spectacular shot midway through the first half and Umit Karan failing to
convert a couple of chances. But the Spaniards recovered to put
Mondragón's goal under pressure, with Riquelme going close, Arruabarrena
having a goal disallowed as the ball had just run out of play in the build up
and Víctor, Belletti and Bataglia all testing the keeper before the
break.
The game swung Villarreal's
way though when Sonny Anderson put his side ahead immediately after the restart
after a pinpoint pass from Riquelme. Five minutes later Roger spotted the
keeper off his line and struck an amazing shot from inside the centre circle
which sailed over the top of everyone and in to the net to make it two.
Víctor's side had been there before only a week ago, but this time there
was no comeback (although if Karan had not been having an awful night things
could have been different). And with the game as good as over, Battaglia won a
tackle in the Turkish penalty area and left the ball on a plate for Riquelme to
run it into the net for the final scoreline. |
