Valencia were the only one
of the four Spanish sides to play their second leg tie away from home, and Rafa
Benítez took a second string side to Turkey to defend the 3-2 lead from
the first leg. But it was enough to see them through, and after Canobbio
brought a good save out of Córdoba early on, Angulo put them ahead in
the twelfth minute when he was first to a wayward pass in midfield and ran on
to beat the keeper.
Besiktas are currently
topping the league in their country, and urged on by a capacity crowd they
pushed forward, with last week's double goalscorer Pancu shooting wide after
Adrian Ilie put him free in front of goal. The pressure continued after the
break, and half time substitute Ahmed Hassan went close within minutes of the
restart.
A few minutes later though,
Xisco broke free down the left wing and floated in a cross which Juan
Sánchez headed down into the ground and past Córdoba for
Valencia's second goal. It was all over, and Palop and his defence comfortably
contained the Besiktas forwards from there on. The home side's frustration
showed through in the last minute when Zago was sent off for a foul on
Marchena. But there was nothing they could do, and Valencia's name goes in to
the hat for tomorrow's draw. |
