Beat Reina from edge of area after Kormiltsev passed across.
Villarreal battled their way
through to the third round of the competition despite losing 1-0 in their
second leg tie against Torpedo Moscow. The two goals scored by Riquelme in the
first leg proved to be enough, although they suffered on the artificial pitch
right up until the last minute.
Benito Floro put out an
attacking side with four forward looking players in the line up, and the
started strongly looking for an away goal which would have wrapped things up
early on. They didn't get it though, and Reina was called upon to make an
important save later in the half to keep the scores level.
Semshov was the Russian
side's most dangerous player, and he had a goal disallowed for a positional
offside of a colleague after the restart. Soon afterwards though he did get the
ball in the net after good work down the left by Lebedenko and Kormiltsev, and
it was game on.
Villarreal were always
looking to score on the breakaway as the Russians pushed forward, and
José Marí could have put an end to proceedings if keeper Borodin
had not turned his shot away for a corner. But Torpedo could have just as
easily levelled the tie in the last minute when Semshov missed an easy chance.
There was great relief in the Spanish delegation when the referee blew the
final whistle. |
